Bluefin Tuna Sets Record at Tokyo Auction

(MENAFN) At Tokyo’s Toyosu fish market on Monday, a bluefin tuna achieved a historic sale, fetching 510.3 million yen (approximately 3.25 million U.S. dollars) during the first auction of 2026.

Among roughly 250 tunas presented at the annual event, the 243-kilogram specimen secured the highest-ever bid, surpassing the previous benchmark of 333.6 million yen set in 2019.

The prized catch originated from Oma, a coastal town in Japan’s northeastern Aomori prefecture, a region celebrated for producing exceptionally high-quality tuna.

The winning bidder was Kiyomura, the operator of the renowned Sushizanmai sushi chain. This marked the company’s first victory at the celebrated wholesale market in six years, once again surpassing its own record established in 2019.
