Erdogan expresses concern on Venezuela in phone call with Trump
Speaking after a Cabinet meeting in Ankara, Erdogan stressed that Türkiye remains committed to supporting “the friendly people of Venezuela in their struggle for prosperity, peace, and development.” He cautioned that actions undermining national sovereignty or ignoring international law carry risks that could trigger “serious global complications.”
“Ankara never approves of any act violating international law,” Erdogan said, highlighting that Türkiye seeks to act in the best interests of both its own citizens and the “brotherly Venezuelan nation.” He added that Türkiye is among the “forefront” of countries defending justice, legitimacy, and international law globally.
Erdogan noted the longstanding friendship between the Venezuelan people and President Nicolas Maduro, stating that the two nations have consistently prioritized solidarity during challenging periods and continue to act with that understanding. His comments came after US military operations over the weekend led to the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who now face drug trafficking charges and pleaded not guilty during a New York court appearance on Monday.
Highlighting Türkiye’s broader international role, Erdogan said his country has always maintained “a clear stance” against injustice, illegality, and oppression. He asserted that Türkiye’s actions are closely observed and often respected worldwide: “Türkiye is making a leap that the world follows with close attention, appreciation, and often admiration, and no one can stand in its way.”
The president also addressed regional security concerns, noting that “terrorism is an imperialist shackle imposed on Türkiye” and that terrorist groups have historically been used as tools for destabilization. He described a historic opportunity to eradicate terrorism permanently and pledged to continue efforts toward a “terror-free Türkiye” with determination, patience, and prudence to resolve the longstanding threat.
