Hollywood director Rob Reiner, wife are found dead in apparent homicide

(MENAFN) Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead at their Brentwood, California, home, in what authorities are investigating as an apparent homicide.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a medical aid call on Sunday and discovered the bodies of 78-year-old Reiner and his 68-year-old wife. Reports indicate both had sustained injuries consistent with a knife attack.

LAPD Chief Detective Alan Hamilton stated that no one has been detained or questioned as a suspect at this stage, although family members will be interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. Some media outlets have speculated that the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, is involved. Later reports suggest he is being questioned by police, though authorities have not officially named him a suspect.

Nick Reiner, 32, previously spoke publicly about struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness, experiences that influenced the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote.

Rob Reiner enjoyed a five-decade career in Hollywood, gaining initial fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family (1971–1979) before directing hits such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally. He transitioned into drama with Stand by Me in 1986 and earned an Oscar nomination for A Few Good Men (1993), starring Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise.

Beyond filmmaking, Reiner was an active political figure and critic of US President Donald Trump. He co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which led the court challenge that overturned California’s same-sex marriage ban. He also championed anti-smoking campaigns and briefly considered a gubernatorial run against Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006 before deciding against it.
