FM states India ‘perplexed’ regarding US view on Russian oil ship-ins
(MENAFN) India has expressed confusion over US secondary sanctions targeting its imports of Russian oil, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said during a press conference with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday. He highlighted India’s role in stabilizing global energy markets and noted that it is neither the largest buyer of Russian oil—China holds that distinction—nor of Russian LNG, likely dominated by the European Union.
Since 2022, India has significantly increased oil purchases from Russia, with Russian crude accounting for 38% of its imports last month, according to Indian Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri. The US recently imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports due to these purchases, adding to an earlier 25% tariff following stalled trade talks.
Jaishankar criticized the levies as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable” and defended India’s actions, noting that Washington had previously encouraged India to buy Russian oil under a price cap to stabilize energy markets. He also pointed out that India’s imports of US oil have been rising, questioning the rationale behind the US sanctions.
