Trump pledges ‘very important decision’ on Ukraine
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced Friday that he plans to make a major decision regarding the Ukraine conflict within the next two weeks, contingent on the positions of both Moscow and Kiev.
Over the past week, Trump has pushed for a direct meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He described his recent Alaska summit with Putin as “very productive” and noted that he also met Zelensky and EU leaders in Washington on Monday, urging both sides to work toward lasting peace.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said, “I think over the next two weeks, we’re going to find out which way it’s going to go… I’ll know in two weeks what I’m going to do. It’s going to be a very important decision.” He indicated that he may choose to impose “massive sanctions” or tariffs, or alternatively “do nothing and say it’s your fight.”
Trump has also floated the idea of a potential three-way summit following a Putin-Zelensky meeting, emphasizing that Zelensky “has to show some flexibility.”
However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted on Thursday that Kiev has shown little interest in a sustainable peace, citing Zelensky aide Mikhail Podoliak’s statements that Ukraine would seek to reclaim territories left to Russia under a deal and pursue membership in a military alliance even if not NATO. Lavrov said these goals conflict with ongoing joint peace efforts led by Putin and Trump.
Moscow continues to demand that any agreement address the root causes of the conflict, ensure Ukraine’s neutrality, exclude the country from NATO or other military blocs, and require demilitarization and acceptance of the new territorial reality.
